|Tom Cruise in "Edge of Tomorrow"|
People see Tom Cruise the star, and his image is so carefully controlled that it is difficult sometimes to know what the real person is like.
Recently, British actress Lara Pulver had a chance to star with Tom in "Edge of Tomorrow," another Tom Cruise science fiction flick (like "War of the Worlds," "Vanilla Sky," "Minority Report" and "Oblivion"). It is a breakthrough role for the actress, who to date had only appeared on the small screen.
Pulver is known for starring in "Sherlock" opposite Benjamin Cumberbatch as Irene Adler. About Cumberbatch, who is something of a sensation in Great Britain, and Cruise, she says:
What they’ve got in common is that they are bloody good actors. And what’s been brilliant with all of them is that they’re not scared to try things out. Tom loves what he does. The passion is infectious. Now, Lara is quite a famous television actress herself in England, but she was quite self-conscious when making small talk with a movie star of Cruise's stature:
There was this brilliant moment where he asked me, “Whereabouts do you live?” and I said, “Oh, just in the Hollywood Hills.” I then started saying that one day I hoped to live mortgage-free somewhere and suddenly thought, “I’m talking about mortgages with Tom Cruise, who has probably never needed to apply for a mortgage in his life! Tom Cruise…mortgages…shut up, Lara!’Below is the trailer for "Edge of Tomorrow," a combination of "Groundhog Day" and "Starship Troopers."
Oscar® nominee Tom Cruise (the "Mission: Impossible" films, "Collateral," "Jerry Maguire") and Emily Blunt ("The Devil Wears Prada," "The Adjustment Bureau") star in Warner Bros. Pictures' and Village Roadshow Pictures' sci-fi thriller "Edge of Tomorrow," under the direction of Doug Liman ("The Bourne Identity," "Mr. & Mrs. Smith").
The epic action of "Edge of Tomorrow" unfolds in a near future in which an alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world.
Lt. Col. Bill Cage (Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop—forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again...and again.
But with each battle, Cage becomes able to engage the adversaries with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Blunt). And, as Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated encounter gets them one step closer to defeating the enemy.
